Amanda Jessup, co-author of Counting Cloth, joins me today to chat about writing cloth diaper books and creating for the cloth diaper community. This is a longer episode as we got chatty talking about the book writing process, my book, some of the challenges of self-publishing and our goals and dreams for future creative projects.

Show 58 Interview with Amanda Jessup

Amanda Jessup is the creator at @illuminatedsketchbook, a digital artist and co-author/illustrator of Counting Cloth.

This is a COVID hobby, Amanda started a ton of great new things, including Digital Art. She drew a picture of her baby — and then she posted about in a facebook group, before she knew it she stumbled into that area of life.

Why did you start cloth diapering?

My friend made it sound like an easy eco-swap. I thought I would give it a go. A large part of Amanda’s stash is Esembly Baby. Liz, the co-founder, has been an amazing support in their customer service and getting Amanda on the right foot for cloth diapering.

The rest of her stash is also Pockets, specifically Bungies.

The Book – Writing & Illustrating Counting Cloth

Amanda’s mom wrote the first draft, and then we changed and tweaked it for young readers over a few drafts. They created the story board together. It was a fun mother-daughter project.

What was the biggest challenge on writing the book – Counting Cloth?

Amanda: I felt like the journey was — wow, it’s so easy or this is so hard, I don’t know what I’m doing.

Self-publishing is easy but difficult. There’s moments of trying to figure out file types and sizes, and covers that is an interesting learning curve for parents.

That said – Bailey, self-publishing means my book has a lot of flaws and edits. Maybe I should have hired an editor, but its also a cost and overwhelm me.

Bailey – I regret not publishing early. Every time I thought about it, I got overwhelmed so I kept putting it off. Self publishing was so easy, and I should have put my book to paperback earlier.

KDP is the Amazon Print on Demand Service.

Ingram Spark – a little less user friendly, and a little harder to format. But Amanda is super happy that the hard cover is coming out so nicely.

Creative Cloth Parents – just jump into it. We need that representation.

One reason I decided to write a children’s book about cloth diapering is to get another story out there about modern sustainability. She wanted to share a story that looked more like her family and how sustainability looks in modern family. Amanda thought it would be important to have families feel represented this way – she wasn’t finding families like hers on the book shelves and create something that would represent her community – cloth diapering, breastfeeding, reusable, gardens, recycles and all those things.

Will you write another book?

I think so.

Bailey and Amanda talks about Bailey’s book and writing the book, what into it, and the ease-of use for the book design cloth diapering.  Bailey talks about some of her fears in publishing her book, and the differences in the book.

What is your favourite thing to create, Amanda?

I love just drawing on my ipad and taking something and making it meaningful for people.
