The Smart Bottoms Smart Fold is an organic cotton/hemp blend prefold made in the United States. This prefold comes in three sizes and is sold individually. Like many Smart Bottoms products, you will need to prep this vigorously to get the best results out of the product. This is not a one wash and go kind of product, this is a wash and wash and wash kinda product.
I bought these when my second was born and actually kinda like them but you can read the review over here because we are talking about the Smart Fold absorbency.
Smart Folds are highly flaunted as an absorbent prefold, and the world is not wrong.
What is a Smart Fold?
It’s just like any other prefold in that it has a thicker mid section with three layers of absorbent material and then wings with a double layer – so a 2-3-2 set up. This is made out of 45% organic cotton and 55% hemp and it is a fleece material meaning it is softer than a jersey. I might compare this to the AMP hemp products in its texture.
The Smart Bottoms Smart Fold is available in three sizes – small, medium and large. The smallest is best suited for kids under 16lbs, while the Medium is for 6-24lbs and the Large for 24lbs plus. The large is quite large and their is less of a size discrepancy between the small and medium. Like the Smart Bottoms website suggest the small could be used as a double nicely with many diapers. Check out my original review.
This is a more expensive prefold cloth diaper. The Small is $7 ($9.95 CDN), Medium $7.50 ($10.25) and the Large only $8 ($10.75 CDN). Most prefolds have a more drastic price change based on size. It’s not really the most budget friendly option in my books. That’s not a bad thing, it’s okay to have expensive things for people who need this kind of product. It’s also made in the USA.
What do I do with it?
You could fold it on baby. You could fold it in thirds and put it in a cover or pocket. You could use the smaller sizes to boost other diapers. This prefold is suggested for overnight diapering and based the absorbency numbers this may or may not work for you.
And the Smart Bottoms Smart Fold absorbency is…
Small – 8.6 oz, 8.8 oz, 9 oz – for an average of 8.8 oz, or $0.79 USD per ounce or $1.13 CDN per ounce.
Medium – 10 oz, 10.8 oz, 9.6 oz – for an average of 10.1 oz, or 74 cents USD per ounce or $1.01 per ounce CDN.
Large – 15.4, 15.3, 15.3 oz for an average of 15.3 oz and 52 cents USD per ounce or 70 cents per ounce.
Smart Fold Absorbency Conclusion
Basically the best deal is the large, but I’m going to say the large is fairly unpractical when it comes to use. It’s an amazing option if you need that much absorbency because you are tackling an overnight heavy wetter with a baby to toddler, but for the run of the mill kid out there the smaller sizes are more practical.
I would buy the Medium again to build a generic stash and would be happy with that sort of absorbency and cost per ounce for the quality of this American made textile using organic cotton and hemp.
