Are you serious Bailey? Yes, Yes I am because I jumped down a rabbit hole on Google Scholar to discover some fascinating things about diapering, skin health and more.
Remember when Nico from Noleo Care was on the Podcast. He talked about the important role that a Noleo Care played in balancing the pH levels of the skin. And while, I recognized the ideology, I didn’t really understand at the time the value of balancing pH skin levels.
Diaper Rash is not just urine on the skin, but how urine and feces interact and change the pH in the diaper to alkaline values and thus irritate the skin. It’s more than just urine. Therefore it’s important to thoroughly clean the skin and reset the pH balance.
Which I found this to be an aha moment because I’ve always thought about diaper rashes as being caused by urine OR feces; not as a combo.
I think we can also think critically about the impact this has on wash routines.
When our diapers are not thoroughly cleaned it is likely that this compounds the issue of alkaline diaper environments.
The assumption that I would draw is that feces particles remaining in the diaper material mix with the urine, increasing the alkalinity of the diaper, and thus causing rashes. Therefore, when diaper dermatitis presents with just pee diapers, we can draw a need to better clean our diapers by improving detergent effectiveness, agitation, and rinsing out the yuck.
I also consider how this opens up the conversation around water pH and the role pH plays in effective wash routines – more so than other factors.
Which we kind of already knew and do – but sometimes it’s cool to see it sourced besides the passed around as word of mouth.
